Nothing But Nets

Nothing But Nets is an amazing program that I am proud to take part in. Every 30 seconds in Africa a child dies of malaria, a disease born from mosquito bites. The majority of those bites come during night time hours when the kids are asleep. Nothing But Nets raises money which is used to purchase insecticide-treated bed nets that prevent people from getting bitten during their sleep and contracting malaria. It takes just $10 to buy a net, and that net can help keep a family safe for 4 years. To buy a net and start saving lives today, click here.

Here’s a look at how the nets get to Africa and to those that need them.

In December 2007, my wife and I were blessed with opportunity to travel to Mali to get a first hand look at the effect of Malaria on the people of Mali and the many lives, families, and communities it impacts. I got involved with Nothing But Nets through a friend named Diego Gutierrez and his wife Gina after hearing of their commitment towards this wonderful charity. Diego approached me with the idea of being involved, and as soon as he explained about the situation in Africa and the number of lives that were being lost, particularly children’s lives, I was shocked and wanted to help right away. So there I found myself in beautiful Mali in the middle of one of, if not the, biggest health campaigns in African history. While there I visited health clinics, villages, and attended awareness campaigns and did everything I could to take every opportunity to learn more and to understand exactly what we can do as a individuals to help solve this serious issue. Diego and I had the opportunity to share some soccer (football) knowledge by putting on a day clinic with some of the up and coming young soccer (football) talent Mali had to offer. For us this was a great way to share some laughs and make the kids smile, as well as help to teach them some vital points about what it takes to be a professional. More importantly it gave us the opportunity to discuss how they can help save their lives and families from Malaria by the use of bed netting. It was a trip that was well over due for me, to go to Africa, but most importantly with the full intention to give back to a continent that has provided the world with so much, to help aid and assist in providing bed nets to save lives!

A Special thanks to all the sincere and wonderful selfless people that I was fortunate to meet on my trip to Mali. I hope to see everyone soon as we will continue on our mission to help to put a stop to Malaria.
